Wimbledon is famous with it’s difficult first round for the top seed tennis players. However, this year has proved to be even worse than any other. From the World’s Top 10 female tennis players, only number 7, Karolina Pliskova, survived the first round. A curious fact is that she never before survived Wimbledon’s first round in London.
The number 1, Simona Halep, lost to Su-Wei Hsieh with 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The number 2, Caroline Wozniacki, lost to Ekaterina Makarova with 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
The number 3, Garbine Muguruza, lost to Alison Van Uytvanck with 7-5, 2-6, 1-6.
The number 4, Sloun Stivens, lost to Donna Vekic with 6-1, 6-3.
The number 5, Elina Svitolina, lost to Tatiana Maria with 6-7, 6-4, 1-6.
The number 6, Caroline Garcia, lost to Belinda Bencic with 7-6, 6-3.
The number 8, Petra Kvitova, lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich with 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
The number 9, Venus Williams lost to Kiki Bertens with 6-2, 6-7, 8-6.
The number 10, Madison Keys, lost to Evgeniya Rodina with 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Serena Williams, Venus’s sister, managed to survive the first round and so far is one of the favourites to take the title home. If Serena succeeds it will be her 24th title.
The top seed is toppled.
